1959. godina, gradić France. Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche) i njena šestogodišnja ćerka se doseljavaju i otvaraju prodavnicu čokolade baš kad počinje post. Džangrizavi gradonačelnik ne može to da prihvati i čini sve što je u njegovoj moći da je zatvori, ali njen topli karakter i neverovatno ukusne čokolade uspeju da preovladaju nad mnogim lokalnim stanovnicima. Stvar se još više zakuvava kad na reku blizu gradića dolazi grupa putujućih umetnika koje predvodi Roux (što jos više razbesni gradonačelnika) i Vianne se upusti u vezu s njim. U međuvremenu, Vianne pomaže Josephine da ostavi muža koji je zlostavlja i istomišljenici Amandi Voizin (Judi Dench) da se zbliži sa unukom Lucom, dok njegova majka to ne dozvoljava...

Zanimljivosti:
- Film Lassea Hallstrom 'Mitt liv som hund' (1985) se takođe dešava 1959.
- Juliette Binoche i Lena Olin su se pre zajedno pojavile u filmu 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' (1988).
- Ovo je drugi put da Victoire Thivisol (Anouk) glumi ćerku Juliette Binoche. Prvi put je to bilo u 'Les Enfants du siecle' (1999).
- Johnny Depp svira gitaru u tri scene u ovom filmu, a takođe je uradio i jednu pesmu za soundtrack.
- Francuski gradić Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, gde je snimljen veći deo filma (osim scena na vodi), nema prodavnicu čokolade. Međutim, to je dom l'Abbaye de Flavigny; opatija pravi kolačiće sa anisom (i drugim začinima) koji se prodaju širom sveta u malim izgraviranim posudicama ukrašenim cvetnim detaljima. Nažalost, fabrika ne dozvoljava posete.
- Sve tri glavne zvezde filma su bile nominovane za Najbolju sporednu ulogu (Juliette Binoche - 'The English Patient' (1996), Judi Dench - 'Shakespeare In Love' (1998), Lena Olin - 'Enemies: A Love Story' (1989)). Binoche i Dench su i dobitnice te kategorije, a nominovane su i za ovaj film.
