Grupa vanzemaljaca posećuje Zemlju i jedan od njih se gubi i ostaje na Zemlji. Njega pronalazi desetogodišnji dečak, Eliot (Henry Thomas). Uskoro, njih dvojica počinju da komuniciraju i započinju poseban vid prijateljstva, u kome E.T. saznaje nešto više o životu na Zemlji, a Eliot o novim vrednostima prijateljstva u pravom smislu reči. E.T. želi da ide kući, ali ako mu Eliot pomogne, izgubiće prijatelja...

Zanimljivosti:
- Na audiciji, Henry Thomas se setio dana kad mu je umro pas da bi iskazao
tugu. Režiser Steven Spielberg je zaplakao, i u momentu ga izabrao.
- Harrison Ford je glumio direktora škole, ali njegova jedina scena je
izbačena jer je Spielberg mislio da bi previše skrenula pažnju. Fordova
žena Melissa Mathison je napisala scenario.
- Lice E.T.-ja je napravljeno po pesniku Carlu Sandburgu, Albertu Einsteinu
i pekinezeru.
- E.T.-jev komunikator je u stvari radio, a napravio ga je Henry Feinberg,
ekspert u interpretaciji nauke i tehnologije za publiku.
- Glas E.T.-ju je pozajmio Pat Walsh, uz pomoć Debre Winger i Stevena
Spielberga.
- Spielberg je film snimao po hronološkom redu da bi izazvao istinsku
reakciju glumaca (uglavnom dece) kad E.T. odlazi na kraju. Sve emotivne
reakcije u zadnjoj sceni su realne.
- Video kaseta filma u Americi je bila napravljena od zelene plastike
kako bi se donekle sprečila piraterija.
- Scena gde se E.T. vozi u korpi sa Eliottom na biciklu ispred meseca
je postala trademark slika Amblin Entertainmenta.
- Michael Jackson je za film snimio pesmu 'Someone In The Dark'. Ona nikad
nije bila upotrebljena.
- Jedan od filmskih spotova koje gleda E.T. na TV-u je iz 'This Island
Earth' (1954).
- Scenario je pisan za vreme pauza snimanja filma 'Raiders of the Lost
Ark' (1981). Spielberg je diktirao priču Melissi Mathison zato što je
ona bila scenarista i zato što je bila tamo sa svojim mužem, Harrisonom
Fordom.
- Spielberg je potrošio $100.000 da bi digitalno uklonio puške iz ponovnog
izdanja filma 2002. godine. On se pokajao što je upotrebio tu scenu i
rekao je da će je ukloniti ako ikad bude došlo do ponovnog izdanja filma.
- Pored Yode koji se pojavljuje u sceni Noći veštica, razne igračke Star
Warsa se nalaze u Eliottovoj sobi. Kreator Star Warsa George Lucas je
vratio uslugu dodajući E.T.-je u 'Star Wars: Epizode I - The Phantome
Menace' (1999).
- Mlađi glumci (Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore i Robert MacNaughton) su
imali poteškoća da gledaju E.T.-ja u oči za vreme snimanja, budući da
su oči na lutki E.T.-ja bile previše razmaknute. Oni su sami rešili problem
tako što su odlučili da gledaju u jedno oko za svaku scenu.
- Skoro 10% od iznenađujuće malog budžeta od $10.5 miliona je potrošeno
na lutke vanzemaljaca i sličnim animatonika.
