Homer (Tobey Maguire) je siroče u udaljenom Sv. Klaudu. Nikad usvojen, on postaje miljenik direktora sirotišta dr. Larcha (Michael Caine), koji prenosi svoje medicinsko znanje na Homera, i on postaje obučen lekar, iako bez diplome. Ali Homer čezne za životom izvan sirotišta. Kada Wally (Paul Rudd) i trudna Candy (Charlize Theron) posete sirotište, dr. Larch obavlja medicinski siguran, ali ilegalan abortus.
